So, it looks like despite all of my mental resistance, tomorrow is still Thanksgiving, and the holidays are right upon us! Don’t get me wrong- I love Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, and everything in between, but sometimes the stress of trying to do everything does get a bit overwhelming. Not to mention the food, the food, the food, and the drinks! Everywhere you look! Tomorrow we have, for example (as do lots of folks I know) two dinners- one at midday, and one at six or so. There’s hardly any way to avoid overeating! Especially when so many things are laden with fat, cream of mushroom soup, carbs, cream, and pretty much anything else you can think of. What is your worst downfall? Mine is probably the carbs, hands down. The sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, rolls, and of course, the desserts. How are you going to be proactive and not let the food attack get you?
If you don’t have an answer, here are just a few thoughts:
Remember what the holiday is about, and BE PRESENT. If you’re talking and enjoying your family and friends, you don’t have to have food in your mouth or your hand the whole time.
When you first arrive, scan the offerings, and size them up. This is easy (in a sense) for me- at my family’s, at least, we do everything buffet style, so it’s easy to take a look at everything first. Load your plate with the clean foods first. If there are any, of course. I’m bringing my own, and that way I can make sure there is something I can eat with relatively little guilt.
Only then, put smaller servings of the more decadent, but “gotta have ‘em” holiday foods on your plate. Most of the time, you’ll find that if you really focus on your food, and focus on your company, AND consciously make good choices, you won’t want any more food after that first plate.
That’s my goal, at least, and one I really have to stick to with 2 dinners coming up!
Another thing to remember is DON’T go lay down and veg out for the afternoon after you eat. You’re going to feel much better if you take a nice walk after you eat, or do something else active. Better yet, get the whole family in on it. You’ll all feel better!
Wishing you a healthy, happy, and lovely Thanksgiving filled with blessings and love!
